By Stan Almendro

My Knapsack on my Back
(The Things We Carry on Our Backs!!!)

A quote by one of the greatest leaders of the world

“I have had a lot of trouble in my lifetime but not much of it ever happened”

We all carry luggage & to some it is financial; physical;spiritual;social acceptance or something not covered by these topics but it is real; & to others it is just luggage (In the mind). These are those that when you greet them you steer away from saying “How are you” & you just feel like saying Hi. The “ How Are You” will keep you busy for a lifetime.

Well to those who are carrying luggage that is real I want to encourage you to added boldness & courage as you bear a load that sometimes makes you feel you are ready to crack. Please know that as you diligently lay hold on life & yourself there is & will be light at the end of what you see as a very dark tunnel. It is always good to sit & sum up what the problem is & lay down a plan of action. That plan can be so many things & often includes you & those affected by your luggage to readjust your lifestyles to resolve the issues. If it needs mature council then seek it but try not to bear your soul to all at sundry.

There are so many casualties who are abused by “So Called Councilors” who prey on people with unfortunate circumstances. My experience, for myself, has been that I work hard at it myself in identifying the problem; assessing the seriousness & then making the necessary changes at meeting the Challenge. Let us remember that we cannot wish things away & issues do not just disappear. The steadfast working at it & walking in dignity will always be a way of upliftment. ( Please feel free to write to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it & I will gladly try to point you in a direction that will assist you) NOW!!

To those who cannot exist without trouble & luggage I would like to spend a few moments & hopefully turn your life around & if this is not possible at least show you the “PAIN” you create in the lives of those round about you.

Firstly let me say that none of us really want to be negative or not nice to be near & it can be & is often something that triggers a lifestyle into our hearts & heads that makes us lean towards this negativity. Those with issues as the above that can be identified are actually fortunate & those who have these issues in the mind only really need to come into the liberty of real living & the wonderful happiness of LIFE. My desire for those being tormented by “UNREAL” issues is that you will be liberated & be the person you really long to be.

You need to ask yourself if you are such a person & with all the courage you can muster give an honest answer & this will be the start to a road of absolute freedom. I know that by now the intellectual freaks are full of critisism that I am trying to over simplify the matter BUT while most of the professional help we solicit is good and plays a role we dare not lose our independence & sell our souls to councilors who end up possessing us.

This is the time when we need to realign our minds; hearts; lives & bring ourselves on track to live a life of dignity & self respect. If you can come to a place where you honestly own up to the problematic person you are & sincerely desire to have a changed lifestyle then you have started on the road to recovery & the laying down of the un-necessary luggage you have carried for too long.

We must remember the effect we have on the lives of each other & when negative & unhappy we shroud those around us with a cloud of GLOOM. It must also be said that as we begin to change we not only lift ourselves to a platform of explicit joy BUT also do this for those we have tortured with our outlook of Gloom.

This article can & will never be the final freedom you crave for but it is only given to trigger, albeit just the start, the desire to have a life with the unnecessary luggage taken off your shoulders.

To those then with real “LUGGAGE” & also to those with “THE LUGGAGE IN THE MIND” I say may 2008 be a red letter year in your life & MAY you grow from strength to strength with a boldness & courage that will not only see you released from your pain BUT also all those around you.

Have A Blessed start to the New Year & listen to the song of Josh who sings
“You Raise Me Up”.
May you find the one or someone who will “Raise You Up”.

We would welcome any items of news in honour of ladies all around the world & will gladly post any letters on our site.

by Giselle Visser

As we look forward to a New Year, may you and I rise to meet each opportunity, goal, challenge and occasion with courage, strength and wisdom. Each of us has experienced love, laughter, kindness and growth the past year and as we look forward to the New Year we must ALWAYS remember that each new day is a gift that should be embraced and cherished. Each of us has beautiful and special qualities, and may we strive to bring these qualities to our full potential in our own lives and those around us.

We all have unanswered questions, unfulfilled dreams, regrets and disappointments when we look back on 2007, but we can still look forward to a new year with hope. Knowing that we grow through difficulties and challenges, learn through our mistakes, and receive strength and wisdom through sorrow and pain. My wish and prayer is that you may receive an abundance of love, happiness and kindness and also strength, wisdom and courage to face the challenges and opportunities in 2008.

May this year be a truly special year, where you not only strive to reach your full potential but succeed in becoming the person you deserve and dream to be. To keep your dreams alive, you need to live for all that which you dream and hope for. From the Whisper Team we would like to say that YOU are special!! Thank you for your support throughout 2007, and we look forward to a wonderful and exciting year.

A thought for the New Year:

We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room-by-room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential.

Best wishes for 2008
Giselle

Writelink: Many Writers, One Community
by Sue Kendrick

“How on earth did you dream up the idea for Writelink?” is a question I have been asked many times since its inception, seven years ago. The truth is I didn’t! The original Writelink began in 2000 and sprang from a few of my favourite writing related links, mainly as a way of organising my own writing resources on the web.

To my surprise, my fledgling site began to attract a steady stream of daily visitors which grew as more assets were added. A few weeks later I launched a monthly newsletter to accompany the site and lo ... www.writelink.co.uk was born! Both site and newsletter expanded quickly over the months until the subscription list today numbers over 8,500!

Published and Paid ...
From the many emails I received it soon became apparent that the two things most writers want is to see their work published and, quite rightly in my opinion, to be paid for it.

Unfortunately it soon became clear to me that although most of these writers had some ability, the vast majority had little idea about how to sell their work by targeting or studying the right markets or presenting their work properly. Moreover, many of them unwittingly made the same mistakes time and time again which inevitably led to rejection.

Enter Writelink Mark II ...
In a road to Damascus flash of illumination I realised that the best way of learning anything is by doing it! To this end, Writelink was redesigned and became a full blown, writers’ community in which members could gain help from each other and publish directly to the site. Membership is set at two levels, Reader and Writer. Readers are welcome to browse most of the pages while Writers have full access to the site which includes our innovative Arena.

The Arena offers our Writer members the opportunity to post stories, poems, articles and book chapters directly to the site and have them rated and commented on by other members. An exclusive, monthly competition is also run through the Arena which offers a cash prize and very often writing related ebooks for the runners up.

Our current competition is Yule Sing Me One Song which calls for festive song lyrics. There is £20 for the best entry and the selected poem will be set to music and sung by one of the Writelink musicians. Details can be found here:
http://www.writelink.co.uk/arenacomps

Writelink Mark III ...
A few months ago we launched the Writelink blogs. Here, Writer members set up and run their own blogs. These are proving very popular and a lot of work is going on behind the scenes to develop these into the third incarnation of Writelink!

The new site will give members full control over what they publish and who they share it with, but will also allow them to add sound and video, run their own newsletters and develop their own circle of friends.

Anyone for the Tour?
In its present format, Writelink is an extensive resource of information and links all designed to help the established and emerging writer. Until you find your way around the community it can be a little bewildering which is why we have produced a short tour. You can get this automatically simply by registering with the site.

The S. Portia Steele Awards And Scholarship For Writers
portia.jpgBy Dennis Steele
Founder and Trustee,
Portia Steele Awards Origination

Portia Steele was a lover of words. She had always been interested in writing poetry and prose as a way of expressing herself. One of her first stories, written when she was seven years old, was about visiting Santa Claus at Macy's Department Store in New York City. From that day until she passed away in 2005, she wrote, and wrote and then -- wrote some more! She loved writing.

One of Portia's earliest endeavors was to co-find the Peninsula Poets Guild along with her friend Fred Bitter. Fred always wanted to have a Shoppe/Coffeehaus where poets could meet to read their own work. The Bitters opened Between the Bookends bookstore in San Mateo, California and together with Portia, organized the first poetry readings on June 10, 1986. The Poets Guild published an anthology of their work, Kaleidoscope©, in 1987.

Portia was the founder and instructor of Women on Writing©, a seminar for published writers sponsored by the Daly City Senior Center in Daly City California. Between the years of 1992 and 2002, as its facilitator, she helped scores of women (and some men too) with their writing and publishing. One task she asked her students to perform was to "submit' their work for publication, and to do so on a regular basis. As a result, many of them were published for the first time. Just as importantly, she learned from them as well.

During that time, for a total of 12 years, she published Prosetry©, a monthly newsletter enjoyed by subscribers from 11 countries around the world. Many promising poets and storytellers had their works published for the first time in this newsletter. She also published Clips©, a series of writing technique and publishing guides.

Portia had scores of articles, poems and stories published during her lifetime, including the prestigious The Writer magazine in Boston, San Francisco Chronicle, Frisson, Changes, Twilight Zone Magazine and Poetry Page. Other works include Fruitsalad: A Cookbook for Poets© published in 1980, Madness Works For Me© published in 1992 and Challenge Your Muse: A Toolbox for Writers©, in 1998. Portia was fond of writing contests, and was a frequent participant in writing competitions in California, New York, Iowa and others. Her most recent work, completed just before her illness, is the story of her dearest friends’ journey as a hidden child in Holland during the Holocaust. It is currently awaiting publication.

It is in the spirit of Portia's love for writing that these awards were conceived. They are meant to celebrate her life as a writer. The S. Portia Steele Memorial Scholarship and awards for writers are offered to continue her work as a scholar and teacher. Please visit her website – http://portiasteeleaward.org - for more information.

Arizona Authors Association
by Mali Berger (Secretary)

Thank you for your invitation to the Arizona Authors Association requesting an article for your Whisper From The Heart Poetry Club. President Toby Heathcotte has asked me to respond to your message.

After reading several entries from your December, 2007, Monthly Newsletter, it is a pleasure to honor your wish. Of particular interest were the No Rush Tours of sunny South Africa, the winning monthly poems such as P. J. Filmalter's This World's A Prelude and T. S. Rakwena's This Christmas and New Year's Day, plus the inspiring list of student contest winners.

Although AZ Authors includes world wide interests of varied talents in articles, essays, true stories, poetry, novels, short stories, fiction, non-fiction and children's literature, we do not have categories for the artist or photographer but do encourage your major work in poetry and short stories.

Since you appear to honor a wide number of young prize winning authors, perhaps you would be interested in our wildly successful Annual Literary Contest. Published and unpublished entries are accepted from January 1 to July 1, 2008, with finalists announced in October and winners revealed at our November Award Banquet. Twenty-three judges read the creative works and determine the winner in each category. A beautiful Arizona Literary Magazine proudly presents the winners of the awards,
publishing segments from the first three winners in each category. The 2007 event took place in the Sheraton Crescent Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona.

Just when I think the banquet and literary magazine can't get any better, they do. This year we had a wonderful site at the Sheraton Crescent, a dynamite lady in charge with Greta Manville, and winners who drove in from around the state and flew in from around the country to claim their prizes, some with tears in their eyes. It's great fun to make people cry--for happiness, that is. Toby Heathcotte

Our association also maintains a website and offers to its members a newsletter, workshops, meetings, festivals and seminars in various locations around the state. Members may advertise free in the newsletter and the Arizona Literary Magazine. We welcome articles from our readers on publishing and writing topics as well as short fiction. We encourage letters to the editor, book reviews and comments.

You may be interested in our January/February, 2008, You Too series offered to members. You Too Can Write a Novel, You Too Can Write Your Life Story, You Too Can Write a Mystery, You Too Can Publish a book, and You Two Can Edit Your Writing. A similar series could be created within your interests: poetry, short story, artist and photography.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to write about AZ Authors. Please find additional information on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Mom
by Merle Hope

Dear Mom, you are old and grey,
no one gives you the time of day.
Lonely in your ancient days,
Dad is gone, he always paved the ways.
You loved one another with a love that lasts,
now you can only remember the past.
My heart aches for you, your sorrow and pain,
my efforts to cheer you, are much in vain.
You need lots of love, but what can I do,
only love, and try my best for you.

Nobody remembers way back then,
How you helped, worried and strived for them.
They are young, strong and bold,
They don't know what it's like getting old.
They are too busy to pick up the phone,
say "hello there, do you feel alone".
Or visit just for a little while,
Make you laugh and see you smile.
They have forgotten what you did for them,
. You and Dad, you were younger then.

Grumpy in your older years,
Nobody understands your fears.
A frail old lady who's memory's gone,
The family is too busy, to come along.
Just visit for a while, listen to you patter,
And make you smile.
Give you a hug, don't worry Gran,
We all love you, we will visit soon again.
Pick up the phone, "hello dear".
No phone calls, through the lonely years.
